Waste-to-energy plant expansion at Okhla: Jobs vs pollution debate rages
NEW DELHI: Delhi Pollution Control Committee held a public hearing on the environmental impact clearance for enhancing the generating capacity of the waste-to-energy plant at Okhla.
At the three-hour meeting held in a school in Madanpur Khadar, residents of colonies close to the plant expressed their opposition to a bigger operation for the plant, but both the private management and employees of the energy plant refuted all accusations that the facility was a health hazard.
The majority of the participants were workers of the Timarpur-Okhla Waste Management Company, a private company owned by the Jindal Group, and their families. Participants had also come from other places, including Mathura and Noida, but they were unaware about the issues being raised by local residents about the plant.
