TN power subsidy breaches 16K crore

Chennai: The state govt has to pay 16,068.5 crore to the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDCL) for this financial year to absorb the burden of the latest hike in power tariffs, and continue to provide subsidy for domestic consumers and free power for agricultural services.

For 2024-25, the state govt paid 15,291 crore towards free and subsidised power. For 2025-26, it should pay an additional 777.56 crore. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) revised the power tariffs in the state from July 1 as part of the multi-year tariff formula, and the tariff was increased by 3.18% in line with the consumer price index (CPI).
