Tamil Nadu sets eyes on energy from waste, to work with NTPC

CHENNAI: The state government will soon sign a memorandum of understanding with National Thermal Power Corporation to produce electricity from waste. This comes close on the heels of NTPC achieving full generation capacity in its 200KW waste-to-energy plant in Karsada at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh using municipal solid waste.
Municipal administration and water supply minister S P Velumani on Monday said the urban local bodies, including 15 corporations (including Chennai), 121 municipalities and 528 town panchayats, generated 7,011MT of biodegradable waste and 6,733MT of non-biodegradable waste a day. “Action will be taken to set up waste-to-energy plants by signing MoU with the NTPC from the waste supplied to them,” he said, adding that the plants will be set up in areas wherever found feasible.
