Rly invites bids for India’s first hydrogen train

NEW DELHI: Aiming to transform itself into a “green transport” system, the Indian Railways has decided to introduce the country’s first hydrogen-fuelled train in the Sonipat-Jind section of Hrayana. It will convert one DEMU rake into a train that can run on hydrogen fuel.

It will be a fuel cell-based technology using hydrogen, besides Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, to support the peak power requirement, and also to store energy due to regenerative braking feature, officials said.

Indian Railways Organisation for Alternate Fuels (IROAF) has invited tenders for this pilot project that will also involve setting up of a complete hydrogen storage facility and supply chain with an estimated cost of Rs 84.2 crore.
