Redeveloped Jaffna international airport opened, Alliance Air flight from Chennai is first commercial flight to land
JAFFNA: The terrain looked lush green dotted with neat houses with brown tiled roofs as the Alliance Air flight made its descend to touch down at Jaffna International airport in the northern province of Sri Lanka on Thursday. There was no sign of destruction and damage a prolonged civil war had once brought to the province.
This is the first commercial flight to land in 40 years after the civil war turned the province into a war zone.
Now, 10 years after the war was over, people have forgotten the gory days. They are on a comeback mode. And Jaffna international airport can be considered a stepping stone in the story of restoration.
Sri Lankan President M Sirisena inaugurated the airport.
Prime Minister of Ranil Wickremesinghe said: “This may be the beginning of flights to Batticola. India has been helping with development of Jaffna. Funds have been given. There is a lot of potential for collaboration, especially between south India and Sri Lanka.
