Power subsidies, mounting losses strain T discoms: Fin panel

Hyderabad: Telangana’s power distribution companies (discoms) are facing a deepening financial crisis, with the state emerging as one of the biggest contributors to mounting losses in the country, the 16th Finance Commission report said.

The report pointed out that Telangana is not only among the top loss-accumulating states, but also one of the largest providers of power subsidies. Of the ₹7.40 lakh crore in accumulated losses reported by state-run discoms nationwide, Telangana alone accounts for about 9%. Other major contributors include Tamil Nadu (24%), Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan (13% each), and Madhya Pradesh (10%). Neighbouring Andhra Pradesh accounts for 4% of the total losses.
