Petrol demand touches pre-covid level in state
Kolkata: For the first time during the pandemic days since March, the demand for petrol in Bengal has surpassed that of the pre-covid level on a comparable basis till September 28 from beginning this month. Nationally, there has been a marginal growth in petrol demand on a comparable basis during the same period. This is one of the indications of economic recovery, but diesel demand was down by 20% because of low demand from railways and aviation fuel was down by 75%, said Pritish Bharat, executive director of West Bengal State office of Indian Oil (IOC).
Interacting with an audience at a webinar on Monday, Bharat pointed out that the average monthly demand for petrol in West Bengal is 1.10 lakh kilolitre taken into account all the three oil PSUs — IOC, Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL). All these three taken together account for more than 90% marketshare in the state.
According to the IOC official, from September 1 till date (Monday), there has been 1% growth in petrol consumption compared to the year-ago period.
