Other countries & airlines have to decide on using or bypassing Kabul airspace: ICAO
NEW DELHI: Who will manage Kabul air traffic control once the US troops leave and will the country’s airports be safe enough for overflying commercial airliners to land in case of a technical snag like single-engine failure?
These questions are plaguing Covid-ravaged airlines as they stare at a prolonged period of bypassing the airspace of that country on flights between the east and the west, at considerable cost. While the future remains uncertain, memories of a hoary past are coming alive again for aviators.
A senior commander who used to operate erstwhile Indian Airlines’ flight between Delhi and Kabul in late 1980s recalls how they used to fly in and out of there at that time.
