ONGC gives India ninth producing basin
NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh could be the next hot spot for oil and gas exploration, with state-run ONGC deciding to commercialise a gas discovery in the state’s Son Valley area that is part of the Vindhyan basin.
This marks the opening of India’s ninth producing basin and the eight by ONGC.
The decision to commercialise the discovery has been taken after exploratory well ‘Hatta-3’ produced over 62,044 cubic meters per day gas, confirming the production potential of Proterozoic Basin for the first time in India.
Active exploration in the Vindhyan Basin began with the acquisition of seismic data in the late 1980s. The first well ‘Jabera1’, was drilled in the basin in 1991. It produced gas of around 2,000 cubic meters per day. ONGC persevered in spite of 14 wells out of 26, drilled in the Son and Chambal valleys over 25 years, giving sub-optimal results.
