LED bulb scheme has saved Rs 20,000 crore in household power bills: PM Modi
NEW DELHI: The government’s ‘Ujala’ LED bulb scheme has saved Rs 20,000 crore in power bills of the middle-class and poor households so far, prime minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, stressing the need for sustainable energy to fuel sustainable growth.
“Free distribution of 37 crore LED bulbs under the Ujala scheme has saved 48,000 million kilowatt-hour, resulted in savings of Rs 20,000 crore for middle-class and poor household and reduced annual carbon emission by 4 crore tonne. Use of LED bulbs in streetlights is saving civic bodies Rs 6 crore annually,” Modi said addressing a renewable energy ministry webinar on energy for sustainable growth.
The Ujala scheme was launched in 2016 during Modi’s first term in office as part of a larger plan to reduce India’s carbon footprint.
