Indian Railways to study joint rail and road tunnels for cost-effective connectivity
The Indian Railways will investigate the feasibility of accommodating both railway and vehicular traffic in tunnels for which alignments are yet to be approved, officials familiar with the matter told ET.
The Centre believes this will enable better use of underground space, particularly in densely populated or geographically constrained areas, they said.
The Railway Board, according to the officials, has requested compliance from all executing agencies within the railways during the alignment finalisation and detailed project report (DPR) stages for the rail and road tunnel projects.
