IATA calls for global rules to fix ‘epic’ market failure in aviation decarbonization
HONG KONG: The airline industry faces an “epic market failure” in its quest to decarbonize, with both sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and eligible carbon credits falling dramatically short of demand, said Marie Owens Thomsen, Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Chief Economist at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Tuesday.
Speaking at the ongoing IATA World Sustainability Symposium in Hong Kong, Thomsen warned that the global aviation sector’s climate ambitions were being stifled not by lack of solutions, but by policy fragmentation and limited government coordination.
