Gujarat to buy power from Tata’s Mundra plant at Rs 4.5 per unit

Forced to buy spot electricity worth Rs 150 crore daily, Gujarat government has now decided to purchase 1800 MW of power from Tata Power’s Mundra plant in Kutch at a cost of Rs 4.5 per unit. Energy Minister Kanu Desai said there will be no power shortage in the state ahead of Diwali.

The move is expected to reduce the burden of buying 4000-5000 MW of electricity from the power exchanges daily.

The cost that the state government will pay to Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Power that manages 4150 MW supercritical power plant, is higher than the one mentioned in the power purchase agreement.
