While the Punjab and Haryana High Court has virtually put brakes on contentious Tribune flyover by putting stay on axing of trees for the project, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs has recommended the UT Administration to expedite the project, aimed at better traffic management in and around the city.
In its report tabled in Rajya Sabha recently, the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs has acknowledged the fact that the case is sub-judice but at the same time, recommended that all projects including Tribune Flyover for better traffic management must be completed expeditiously.
The High Court had in November last year stayed the transplanting and axing of 473 trees for the Tribune flyover project, on an NGO’s plea and asked the Administration to look for other solutions to the congestion problem at the Tribune Chowk.
Since then, uncertainty looms over the future of this project. The Administration will now be submitting a report regarding the public hearing held on the proposed project and other alternatives explored for the congestion problem at the Tribune Chowk to the High Court, which is scheduled to hear the case this month.
