Electricity bills may vary monthly as DERC asks discoms to levy fuel surcharge

NEW DELHI: Your electricity bill may soon start varying every month, with Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) proposing a new system to automatically factor in changes in fuel and power purchase costs. In draft regulations released on Wednesday, DERC suggested amendments to its 2017 tariff rules to allow power distribution companies to levy a fuel and power purchase adjustment surcharge (FPPAS) on consumer bills without waiting for regulatory approval.

The power regulator sought feedback from the public and other stakeholders on the proposed amendment to Regulation 134 of the DERC (Terms & Conditions for Determination of Tariff) Regulations, 2017, by Sept 24.
