Delhi Metro ridership hits 87% of pre-pandemic levels

NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro’s daily average ridership in September rose to 87% of the pre-pandemic levels, according to the latest data of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). There has been a steady growth in daily average ridership in the past few months. The footfall in September was 47.3 lakh as against 39.5 lakh in May.

Due to the lockdown in 2020 and subsequent Covid-19 waves, Delhi Metro witnessed a major reduction in footfall. After operating with reduced capacity for around two years, it started functioning with 100% seating and standing capacity from the last week of February this year.

According to DMRC’s data, September 2022 witnessed 47.3 lakh footfall per day compared with 54.5 lakh in September 2019. An official said as the mass transit system had regained 87% of its average daily utilisation compared with 2019, this showed that Delhi Metro was inching towards normalcy. The agency expects a further rise in footfall from October, considering the trend of the past six months.
