Delhi Metro cops go high-tech with mobile facial recognition to nab suspects in real time

NEW DELHI: Metro police have introduced a mobile facial recognition system (FRS) that allows officers to instantly verify the identities of wanted suspects at metro stations through devices linked to Delhi Police’s criminal database.Police said the FRS enables real-time ID verification and watch-list checks because the personnel can capture on the phone a suspect’s image at a station or on a train and then match it with the database. If a match is confirmed, officers can take immediate action. The system also allows them to record new data.

The system has already helped police catch several criminals. For example, Tasleem, alias Bhura, was caught at Shastri Park metro; he was involved in 26 criminal cases, and a stolen mobile phone was recovered from him.
