Deaths due to coal pollution in Delhi may double in 9 years, says study

NEW DELHI: The number of premature deaths occurring from coal-related air pollution in Delhi could almost double in the next nine years, with 5,280 premature deaths expected till 2030, a new study shows. The report comes in the light of India’s plans to expand the coal fleet by another 64GW between 2020 and 2030.

The report by C40 Cities, “Coal-free cities: the health and economic case for a clean energy revolution”, says Delhi records 330 premature deaths due to coal-related pollution a year. However, 250 more deaths would be added each year till ’30. Around 12% of India’s coal-generated electricity falls within 500km of Delhi.
