Coal’s share in India’s electricity mix likely to fall from over 70% in 2025 to about 60% by 2030: Report
New Delhi: Coal’s share in India’s electricity mix is projected to fall from over 70% in 2025 to about 60% by 2030, even as the country’s overall coal demand is expected to rise 17% over the next five years, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
IEA said India’s total coal consumption in 2025 is likely to record a marginal year-on-year decline of 1.2%, driven mainly by a 3% drop in coal-fired power generation. Higher hydropower output following an early and strong monsoon, lower electricity demand for cooling and the continued expansion of renewable energy capacity have contributed to the decline.
