Centre returns Tamil Nadu’s metro rail proposals for Coimbatore and Madurai

CHENNAI: The Union govt has turned down Tamil Nadu’s proposal for metro rail systems in Coimbatore and Madurai saying the population in the two cities, as per the 2011 census, is below the two million required under the Metro Rail Policy 2017.

In a communication to the state govt dated Nov 14, the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs returned the detailed project reports (DPRs) saying Coimbatore’s population stands at 15.84 lakh and Madurai’s at less than 15 lakh, which were below the two million required under Clause D(ii)(a) of the 2017 policy to begin planning metro systems.
