Centre cites ‘150-km rule’, removes Hosur from UDAN list
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has announced plans for an international airport at Hosur, but Centre has removed it from the list of airports to be developed under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme. However, licensing work is underway for the Vellore and Neyveli airports, developed at Rs 84.9 crore under UDAN.
Tamil Nadu govt sources said they are not seeking funds under the UDAN scheme, which is intended to improve regional air connectivity by developing smaller airports in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. The state is pursuing a plan to build an international airport on more than 2,300 acres at Shoolagiri, east of Hosur city, that could handle up to three crore passengers a year. “A private developer may be involved in the project,” a source familiar with the plan said.
