Cairn Oil & Gas, a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd. and India’s largest private oil and gas exploration firm, has announced its Field Development Plan (FDP) for the Jaya discovery in Gujarat. The FDP, targeting an initial production of over 2,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), marks a significant step in enhancing India’s energy self-reliance.
Discovered in August 2021 under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP), the Jaya field in the Bharuch district is poised to contribute significantly to Cairn’s objective of doubling its production capacity. This initiative aligns with the national goal of energy self-sufficiency, or aatmanirbharta, in the energy sector.
Steve Moore, Deputy CEO, Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta Ltd said, “We are delighted to have progressed to Jaya discovery to its FDP and ready to begin production from Jaya block.” Moore emphasized the discovery’s significance in achieving 50% contribution to India’s domestic oil and gas production.
During its appraisal phase, Cairn pioneered an innovative gas evacuation method at the Jaya field. The company deployed truck-mounted Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) kits to supply gas to nearby stations, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative by an E&P operator in India. This method not only facilitated gas monetization but also aligned with the company’s decarbonization vision.
Additionally, Cairn has entered into a commercial gas sales agreement to off-take gas from the field. Advanced Rock Physics and Seismic Inversion technology were instrumental in identifying a cluster of prospects around the Jaya area, indicating potential for further development and integration with the Jaya facility.
The FDP submission for the Jaya field represents the first in India’s OALP regime, distinguishing Cairn’s commitment to enhancing India’s energy sector. The development of the Jaya field signifies Cairn’s continuous efforts in exploration and production, reinforcing its position as a key player in driving India’s energy security.
