Bitumen demand surges 47% in August as road construction activity picks up

Bitumen demand surged 47% in August after decreasing in April-July as rains eased, signalling a recovery in road construction.

Consumption increased to 0.42 million metric tonnes (MMT) in August from 0.29 MMT a year earlier, according to petroleum and natural gas ministry data. Imports of bitumen jumped 49% during the month, with about a third of the country’s total consumption met through overseas purchases.
