Airline fined for denying travel over ‘single name’

Chennai: Can a missing surname keep someone from flying? It did for former Tamil Nadu MLA Nizamudeen, who was stopped from boarding a Gulf Air flight at Moscow airport because his passport had only one name.

According to the complaint, Nizamudeen, who is a practising advocate and former legislator, was due to attend a meeting in Dubai on Feb 10, 2023. Despite holding a valid UAE visa under the same single-name passport, he was not allowed to board a flight to Bahrain, which was to connect him to Dubai.
