Air travel market contracts in April due to capacity crunch

NEW DELHI: After years of double digit growth, India’s air travel market has started contracting in April as the industry grappled with a sharp reduction in capacity owing to various factors, latest data from civil aviation regulator showed on Wednesday.

Domestic carriers transported 1.1 million passengers in April, 4.5% less than the 1.15 million people they carried in the same month a year ago, as per Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The contraction in air passenger market contrasts sharply against the 18.6% growth in passengers reported in the 2018 calendar year from the year ago period. In the January-April period of 2019, domestic carriers ferried 4.64 million passengers, showing a 2.5% growth from the same time a year ago.
