Air India flight deploys emergency engine just like crashed AI 171, pilot body says checking fuel switch not enough

In a major scare, Air India’s Amritsar–Birmingham flight reported that the Boeing 787’s Ram Air Turbine (RAT) unexpectedly deployed during its final approach on October 4. Though the flight landed safely, the incident rekindled memories of the AI 171 crash that killed 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 others on the ground. Notably, both incidents involved the Boeing 787 aircraft.

The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has now urged aviation safety regulator DGCA to conduct a thorough inspection and investigation of the electrical systems across all Boeing 787 aircraft operating in India.
