Air India finally sells its ‘Baby Boeing’ it didn’t even know it owned. Here’s the curious case of lost Boeing 737-200

More than three years after Air India’s privatisation, a long-forgotten Boeing 737-200 has finally found a buyer. The aircraft, over four decades old, had been lying idle at a remote parking bay in Kolkata airport — so forgotten that Air India itself had no idea it still owned it.

This cargo-configured jet was grounded in 2012 and later decommissioned for use by India Post. Over time, it slipped out of official records and institutional memory. It wasn’t until Kolkata airport authorities asked Air India to remove the abandoned plane that its existence resurfaced.
