Additional 1,500MWh battery storage to meet TN’s power demand
Chennai: In two years, the state need not burn a hole in its pockets with high-cost power purchase to meet evening peak hour demand. The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation (TNGECL) will set up battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a capacity of 2,500megawatt-hour (MWh) to store excess solar power being generated during the day and use it later at night.
During summer, power demand peaks during evening hours and lasts till midnight. The entire demand is met through generation from thermal plants and high-cost power purchases due to the unpredictability of wind power and unavailability of solar power.
