59% of Indian carriers’ fleet are fuel-efficient, data shows
MUMBAI: Only 20 % of world’s current, in-service airline fleet comprises latest generation aircraft, with most of the commercial airline aircraft in use today being previous generation fuel guzzlers. But India is far ahead in that aspect of decarbonization as 59% of its airline fleet comprises latest generation, fuel-efficient aircraft, according to data provided by European aerospace corporation, Airbus.
“Replacement of older generation aircraft is one of the most straightforward ways to decarbonize the sector and in that aspect India is well ahead of the curve,” said an Airbus spokesperson in a response to a TOI query on the subject. Airbus recently concluded a two-day annual summit where it showcased a slew of initiatives to reduce aviation’s climate impact, prime among them being its work on a new hydrogen-powered fuel cell engine to power its zero-emission commercial aircraft, scheduled to hit the market in 2035.
