117cr to make four NHAI stretches in state ‘zero fatality highways’
Chennai: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sanctioned 117 crore to upgrade four accident-prone stretches in Tamil Nadu as part of its national initiative to develop ‘zero fatality highways’.
The bulk of the funding of 111 crore has been earmarked for the Madurai–Kayathar section of NH-44, notorious for frequent and fatal crashes. The NHAI will construct four vehicular underpasses, widen roads, and streamline traffic at junctions, including Thuvariman, Thanakkankulam and Sivarakottai. This stretch has witnessed several major accidents, including a 2022 omni-bus crash near Arasakulam that killed three and injured 11.
