Peak-hour electricity prices for the region rose above Rs 4 per unit onpower exchanges and touched Rs 5 per unit in the South. Electricity bills of consumers may go up this winter in these areas, while they may drop in regions supplying electricity, such as the west and east. <\/p>\n
Mist can cause transmission lines to trip and authorities have started regulating power supplies as a precautionary measure, according to experts. This has resulted in power remaining unsold in surplus regions such as west and east India and a deficit in other parts, where prices have risen. <\/p>\n
\u201cDense mist along with pollutants sips into the non-conductor ceramics that separate the metal wires from the poles. Pollutants are mostly electricity conductors and lead to short circuits and high-voltage transmission lines trip,\u201d said Rajesh K Mediratta, director of business development at the Indian Energy Exchange. \u201cA major part of high-transmission lines are in rural India and runs over irrigated farms where moisture content in air is far larger than in urban areas.\u201c <\/p>\n
According to officials, the situation worsens as winter advances. In some areas, droplets turn into ice at night, trapping the pollutants and causing short circuits. <\/p>\n
Transmission companies are supposed clean the ceramic non-conductors that separate the live wires from poles, a task that is often tedious and in areas that are not always easily accessible. As a precaution, transmission companies curtail the volume of power that can be wheeled during these times. <\/p>\n
Such curbs also prompt some power producers to cut back on generation, widening the shortage of electricity supply. <\/p>\n
