The government will shortly impose a levy of Rs 7,500-Rs 8,500 on pan-India flights by scheduled carriers such as IndiGo and Jet Airways.<\/p>\n<p>The charge will be imposed per landing.<\/p>\n<p>Funds from the levy will contribute to a corpus which will cross-subsidize small regional carriers flying between small towns for fares capped at Rs 2,500.<\/p>\n<p>The government aims to raise Rs 500 crore in the first 12 months of imposing the levy.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of the government&#8217;s recently announced regional connectivity scheme.<\/p>\n<p>For flights up to 1,000 km, there will be a levy of Rs 7,500. For flights between 1,000-1,500 km, it will be Rs 8,000 and for flights beyond 1,500 km, the levy will be Rs 8,500.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, the burden on individual passengers will be much less.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Airbus A320 is the most popular aircraft operating in domestic air routes. The aircraft has 180 seats. Even considering an occupancy of 100, the additional burden per passenger shouldn&#8217;t be more than Rs 75 to Rs 85, said an airline executive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Local flyers should brace for higher airfares.
