BUCHAREST” Danish renewable energy developer Eurowind Energy plans to build onshore green power projects worth 3 GW in Romania by 2030, its external affairs director said on Tuesday, but insufficient grid connections could hamper investment.<\/p>\n
Joachim Steenstrup said the company will finalise a 50 MW wind park next year in Romania. Two thirds of its three-gigawatt investment pipeline was in early development stages, he said.<\/p>\n
“We don’t list anything where we don’t have the user rights for the land,” Steenstrup told an energy seminar. “But the timeline will very much depend on can we get a grid connection for these projects.”<\/p>\n
Eurowind did not give financial details of the projects.<\/p>\n
Romanian deputy energy minister George-Sergiu Niculescu said earlier on Tuesday that state power grid operator Transelectrica plans to tap 475 million euros ($507.40 million) in European Union funds to add power lines and boost connections.<\/p>\n
“We know that there’s room to actually do renewables,” Steenstrup said. “We have some legacy markets. But Poland and Romania are our biggest sort of future markets in Europe.”<\/p>\n
Eurowind Energy is present in 16 countries.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, EU funds are expected to drive a surge in green energy investment in Romania, which has committed to phasing out coal by 2032 and replacing it with gas, nuclear and renewable energy.<\/p>\n
The country has slated a first tranche of 460 million euros to support 950 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy.<\/p>\n
An additional more than 1.5 billion euros from the EU’s modernisation fund are available for support schemes for companies and local administrations to build green energy projects for their own consumption or to sell.<\/p>\n
Energy distributor Engie Romania also plans to have 1 GW worth of renewable energy projects installed by 2030, Chief Executive Eric Stab said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Steenstrup said wide European interest to boost renewable power projects meant placing an order for wind turbines now meant they could be delivered in 2025-2027.<\/p>\n
