It was too big for a new company. We faced many issues. We focused on completing the plant and developing expertise. So no one talked about expansion then. Now that we have established our competence and have the expertise, it is natural to expand for future growth,” Vishnoi said.

The company expects to commission its first thermal project at Khurja in UP early next year. But it will start the captive coal mine — Amelia in Madhya Pradesh — this year. “There is big demand for coal. The government has allowed captive miners to sell surplus in the market. We want to capitalise on the opportunity and will start mining by the end of this year,” Vishnoi said the thermal foray was needed to add capacity quickly.

THDC is poised to notch up another milestone in the current financial year by commissioning the world’s largest pump storage power plant in Tehri. “The country will be power surplus with rapid growth in renewable generation. The pump storage will allow us to store surplus power and feed the grid at short notice. This will go a long way in stabilising the grid in the face of intermittency of renewables,” Vishnoi said.

The company’s largest play will, however, be in renewables, particularly solar. “We have a basket of large projects in UP and have mega solar parks lined up in Rajasthan, where we have taken a fresh approach by offering stake to the state. This will give us access to revenue land also and ensure smooth approvals,” Vishnoi said.

THDC is also looking at growth in renewables through acquisition of distressed assets and applying for trading licence to create a better interplay of assets and operation flexibility.

Uttarakhand-based THDC (formerly Tehri Hydroelectric Development Corporation), long considered a minnow and hardly any future, is on a roll with a Rs 40,000-50,000 crore plan to raise capacity to over 40,000 MW by straddling thermal, pump storage, wind and solar generation as well as captive coal mining in the next 2-3 years.
