NEW DELHI: India’s fuel demand appears to be playing a slow catch-up with the pre-pandemic level. Diesel demand, a key indicator of industrial activity, slid 8% and petrol consumption declined 2% in February from a year ago, market data showed on Monday.
\nIn an encouraging sign, however, data showed diesel sales reversing the trend in January to post a monthly gain of more than 12%. Sales had declined nearly 6% in January from December level, pausing the trend since October last year.
\nMonthly growth in petrol consumption was also in double digits, rising more than 11% from December. January sales had dipped over 3% from December level in a sharp departure from the trend since October.
\nThe rebound after the decline in January reflects increased economic activities in terms of movement of people, raw materials and finished products.
