BENGALURU: Slammed by the high court for its statements on the Envronment Protection Act which created a controversy, the National Highways Authority of India got into damage-control mode on Tuesday and said it will donate Rs 2.5 lakh each to two Dehradun-based organisations researching on forests and wildlife.
\nAfter taking objection to certain references in the statement of objections filed on NHAI\u2019s behalf \u2014 it was alleged that the Act had been passed in parliament at the instance of foreign powers \u2014 the court had sought for an inquiry against the officer who filed the statement.
\nWhen NHAI\u2019s counsel requested the court to permit withdrawal of the statement, a division bench headed by chief justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka refused but said before passing any order, an opportunity will be given to the Authority to donate to any organisation doing constructive work in the field of environment.
