{"id":393703,"date":"2021-01-06T11:14:02","date_gmt":"2021-01-06T05:44:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infralive.com\/web\/?p=393703"},"modified":"2021-01-06T11:39:53","modified_gmt":"2021-01-06T06:09:53","slug":"west-bengal-tops-list-of-states-buying-dirty-coal-based-power-cse-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infralive.com\/web\/west-bengal-tops-list-of-states-buying-dirty-coal-based-power-cse-study\/","title":{"rendered":"West Bengal tops list of states buying &#8216;dirty&#8217; coal-based power: CSE study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KOLKATA: A new state-wise assessment of coal power procurement, done by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), has found West Bengal to be number one state in buying the dirtiest coal power in the country in terms of compliance with sulphur dioxide (SO2 ) norms.<br \/>\nAccording to the study, most of the stations supplying electricity to the state have not taken adequate measures to comply with December 2015 sulphur dioxide norms notified by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.<br \/>\nSignificantly, Bengal being at tail-end of Indo-Gangetic plain, has had huge coal resources and thermal power plants are dotted around the coal rich areas. It has a very small presence in clean renewable power like hydro and solar power, said a senior state government official.<br \/>\nCSE researchers have considered the progress made by power stations to meet only the SO 2 norms as a measuring scale to identify the dirtiest power because limits on oxides of nitrogen have already been watered down, and particulate matter norms do not demand much changes in the system.
