NEW DELHI: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is building a greenfield airport at Hollongi, Arunachal Pradesh, 15 km from the state capital Itanagar. The Rs 650-crore airport is likely to be completed by November 2022 and handle 200 passengers during peak hours.
\nAt present, the airport closest to Itanagar is 80 km and three hours away by road at Lilabari in Assam. Arunachal has two small airports \u2014 Teju and Pasighat \u2014 where only turboprops can operate. This means they can have flights mainly to and from Guwahati.
\n\u201cThe Hollongi airport will have Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 operating which means it can have direct flights to anywhere in India and neighbouring countries as per commercial viability of airlines. In terms of aviation, the biggest demand of the northeast has long been to have direct connectivity with Delhi. That will now be fulfilled,\u201d said a senior AAI official.
