The outage was attributed to a technical failure involving multiple tripping of power transmission lines and supply transformers.

The power outage has brought the city’s suburban rail network to a temporary halt. Executives at the stock exchanges and the Mumbai Airport confirmed that their operations remained unaffected.

The state’s energy minister Nitin Raut said, a technical failure in one of the circuits of a 400 KV line of the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company (Mahatransco) at the Kalwa-Padha GIS Centre had caused the power failure. The minister added that power supply will be restored shortly.

According to information shared by distribution companies, one of the circuits, 400KV Kalwa – Padgha Circuit 2 suddenly tripped, further tripping 400KV Kalwa – Kharghar due to overload. Padgha Circuit 1 was under outage and 400KV Kalwa – Talegaon was under shutdown.

A senior sector executive said the 400kV Kalwa-Padgha-2 line carrying 633 Mw of power tripped. This led to the power flow on the alternate Pune-Khargar increasing to 900 Mw, thereby tripping that line also at around 10 am. The multiple tripping is different transmission lines tripped the two Khargar Inter-Connecting transformers (ICTs). This thereby caused the power load drop of 360 MW in the Mumbai power supply system, followed by a city-wide outage.

Mumbai has three power distribution companies – Tata Power, BEST Electricity and Adani Electricity and all three faced power cut in their respective areas.

Adani Electricity in a tweet said, the company is currently supplying around 385 MW to critical services in Mumbai through AEML Dahanu generation. “There is a major power grid failure due to which supply is affected in most areas of Mumbai. As per grid safety protocols, Adani Power System has been able to sustain and islanded”, the tweet further added.

Tata Power shared on Twitter: “At 10.10 am there were simultaneous substation tripping in MSETCL’s Kalwa, Kharghar causing a huge dip in frequency in the Mumbai transmission system which led to tripping of Mumbai power supply. Restoration work is in progress to bring supply from the 3 Hydro units.”

The total Mumbai load loss is 2600 Mw. Officials said 360 Mw supply in Mumbai and suburbs remained affected and restoration was under process. Top officials from Power System Operation Corporation (POSOCO) said, “There is no grid problem, only the Mumbai system is affected.”

Executives at Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) said none of their transmission network encountered any error and it was the state’s own transmission line that tripped. “There has been no tripping of our transmission lines in the Western Region. All transmission lines are in proper operating system,” said a PGCIL executive.

POSOCO is the national power grid operator and PGCIL is the central transmission utility and state-owned largest power transmission company in the country.

In addition to residential areas, the power outage has also impacted suburban rail operations, including the busy Churchgate -Borivali western suburban line, where services were suspended.

Residents of Mumbai city and adjoining areas started Monday morning with a city-wide power outage, a rarity for the country’s financial capital.
