{"id":366145,"date":"2020-08-04T10:58:02","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T05:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/infralive.com\/web\/?p=366145"},"modified":"2020-08-04T11:53:57","modified_gmt":"2020-08-04T06:23:57","slug":"road-widening-to-swallow-green-cover-in-sharavathi-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infralive.com\/web\/road-widening-to-swallow-green-cover-in-sharavathi-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Road widening to swallow green cover in Sharavathi sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The proposal by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for widening the Kumta-Sirsi Road \u2014 which passes through the Sharavathy Valley Wildlife Sanctuary \u2014 has secured in-principle approval, putting more pressure on the biodiversity hotspot threatened by several development projects. <\/p>\n<p>About 1.5 km of the 59 km road between Sirsi-Kumta passes through the sanctuary, where the KPTCL is already drilling for a survey for the proposed 2000 MW pumped storage electricity project. <\/p>\n<p>According to the NHAI, the road will be widened into a two-lane road with paved shoulders but will come at the cost of green cover.<\/p>\n<p>As per the proposal, more than 10,185 trees will be cut and about 52 acres of forest land in Honnavar and Sirsi division will be diverted for road work.
