His son Kishor Mehta conceptu- alized the Lilavati Hospital project and played a pivotal role in its design and implementation under his father's guidance. Unfortu- nately, Mr Kirtilal passed away in 1993, before the hospital started functioning in 1997 with 10 beds and 22 doctors. Since then the hospital has grown, it now has 314 beds, 12 operating theatres, 300 consultants, intensive care units (ICUs), and 1,800 staff members, providing care for 300 in-patients and 1,500out-patients daily. Mr Kishor's wife Charu Mehta was also equally involved in the deve l opment and running of hospital. Together, they laid the foundation of Lilavati Hospital in 1997 with the dream of providing c omp a s s i ona t e , wo r l d - c l a s s healthcare to all. She has been the heart and soul of Lilavati Hospital, continuing the vision she shared with her late husband who passed away last year. She has instilled a culture of empathy and selfless servicewithin the institution. At the time of formation of Trust, Mr Kirtilal made three Permanent Trustees (“PT”) for life – Kishor & his wife Charu, and Kishor's sister Ms Rekha Sheth. Every decision, including appointment of Term Trustee (“TT”), was required to be taken by majority of the PTs. This formation suggests that when Mr Kirtilal conceptualized the Trust, he wanted to give the control of the Trust in the hands of Mr Kishor's family only. Later, within the Mehta family, certain members started fighting with each other over control of the Trust. For ease of reference, these family members have been broadly classified under two categories - Group-1 (Kishor's family) and Group-2 (others). The Group-2 has also been sub-divided into 2A, 2B & n 1978, Late Kirtilal Manilal I Mehta - an Indian business- man fondly known as Bapaji (who was also the founder of Antwerp-based diamond company Gembel NV in 1956) - established the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust in memory of his late wife Lilavati KirtilalMehta. Ms Lilavati was a compassionate woman. Deeply respected and loved, she dedicated her life to the betterment of the underprivileged. She strongly believed in equality, advocating every child deserves an education and equal opportunities in life. Mr Kirtilal started Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre in Mumbai with the vision to provide unmatched healthcare services to the common man, which now operates Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai's posh area Bandra.
