NEW DELHI: Prepaid smart meters help reduce the cost of power by up to 2.5% as the devices lead to reduction in operational and finance costs for distribution companies (discoms) as a result of consumers paying in advance, power minister R K Singh said on Monday.
“If you have a smart prepaid meter, your cost of electricity will come down by 2-2.5 per cent and the consumer gains… Energy accounting system…is another challenge which we are still tackling,” Singh said while releasing a survey conducted by public policy think-tank CEEW (Council on Energy, Environment and Water) with support from MacArthur Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
