Kolkata: Homes in Kolkata escaped the wrath of the Monday evening squall but around 10 lakh homes in the rest of south Bengal plunged into darkness as the high-velocity winds flattened electricity poles and affected a third of the feeders in the belt.
An official of state distribution utility WBSEDCL, which supplies power to Salt Lake, New Town and rest of Bengal except Kolkata, parts of Howrah and Hooghly that is serviced by CESC, said the squall had caused widespread disruption in south Bengal, snapping supplies to 10 lakh homes in Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia and Jhargram.
“Of the 3,690 feeders of 11kv capacity in this region, 1,314 were impacted. Over 100 transformers were affected.
