To promote the purchase of electric vehicles the government has exempted income tax worth Rs 1.5 lakh for buying electric vehicles. Customs duty for import of certain parts of electric vehicles have also been reduced to promote electric mobility including bringing down the custom duty on lithium-ion cells. The government has also moved the GST Council to lower the GST rate on EVs from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. The registration charges on EV are also being waived.
