KOLKATA: Armed with a Supreme Court stay on his arrest till April 6, Anup Maji alias Lala, the prime accused in the illegal coal mining case, appeared before the CBI at its Nizam Palace office in Kolkata on Tuesday, four months after the investigating agency lodged an FIR naming him as the prime accused.
Sources said the CBI asked Maji to verify the authenticity of several seized documents and may summon several others based on his questioning. He has again been summoned on Thursday.
Maji reached the agency’s office at 10.30am and was quizzed for over nine hours. The questions primarily revolved around others involved in illegal coal mining, the sources said.
The CBI also tried to zero in on specific transactions made by Maji based on his earlier statements to the income tax department. It has reasons to believe that Maji and his deputy Joydeb Mondal stashed their ill-gotten money in a maze of companies.
