The central government is advancing its efforts in clean energy transition by focusing on new technologies such as Small Nuclear Reactors (SMRs), said Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology Jitendra Singh. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, the minister underlined the role of nuclear power as a promising clean energy source for power generation.
Highlighting the global trend towards nuclear energy to reduce fossil fuel dependency, Singh emphasized the potential of Small Modular Reactors. These reactors, known for their features like modularity and scalability, are being considered for replacing retiring coal-based thermal power station sites and in locations not suitable for large nuclear plants. SMRs are expected to play a significant role in generating low-carbon electricity and assisting the country’s shift from fossil fuel reliance.
However, the minister clarified that SMRs are not anticipated to replace conventional large-sized nuclear power plants, which are essential for base load power generation.
Singh also addressed the safety and regulatory standards of nuclear power plants, stating that they are installed and operated under strict regulations to ensure containment of radiation and safety of the public. He acknowledged that the techno-commercial aspects of SMRs are still in the early stages globally and their large-scale deployment will depend on several factors. These include global regulatory harmonization by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), particularly regarding emergency planning zones and public acceptance.
The initiative to develop SMRs aligns with India’s commitment to transitioning towards clean energy, with an emphasis on reliable and continuous power supply for industrial decarbonization.
