NEW DELHI: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday unveiled a big plan to cut down import of forged wheels and gradually emerge as an exporter of the item.
The ministry has floated a Rs 1,200 crore tender inviting private players and PSUs for manufacturing of forged wheels in the country for high-speed trains. It will soon float tender for manufacturing high-strength tracks for the dedicated freight corridor and the high-speed trains.
This move will insulate India from avoiding the fallout of situations like the Ukraine war, which delayed supply of wheels for Vande Bharat trains. Vashnaw said these are aimed at making India self-reliant in meeting its demand and to be in a position to export them.
