The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is in talks with the state’s Energy Department and Public Works Department (PWD) over the empanelment of electrical expert agencies to prevent fire incidents due to short circuits.
Ashwini Bhide, Additional Municipal Commissioner, told the Indian Express that “currently there is no provision in the BMC Act, which makes it mandatory to housing societies and developers to provide self-certification, over the fitness of electrical systems.” Around 80 per cent of fire incidents, she stressed, occur due to short circuits.
“Till the time the experts are empaneled, we are asking societies and developers they should get their building meters and cable checked by any certified electrical engineer.
