On January 11, China's state- owned media reported the first known death from the new virus in Wuhan. By then, more than a month had passed since the first patients with symptoms of the new virus had been admitted to Wuhan hospitals. Ms Wei, who eventually recov- ered and left hospital in January, believes she caught the infection from a toilet she shared with wild meat sellers at the market. Ven- dors on either side of her live shrimp stall caught the disease, as did members of her family.
