Power generation in KKNPP Unit II stopped for maintenance work

Power generation from the second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) has been suspended to take up maintenance work, a KKNPP official said Saturday.

“Power generation at Unit-II has not been stopped due to any valve breakdown as stated in the news. This was a planned outage,” KKNPP Senior Manager, HR-Press Relations, J Devaprakash said.

The official was responding to reports that appeared in a section of media about unit II being shut due to a “valve malfunction”.

In a press release, he said the maintenance work was expected to be completed in a “couple of days.”

On the status of Unit-I, he said, the scientists have undertaken refuelling work and the annual maintenance work was nearing completion.

“After carrying out all the mandatory tests, the unit will be made functional soon,” he said.

The Unit-I of the project commenced commercial operation on December 31, 2014 while the second on March 31, 2017.

Since Unit I commenced operation it has generated 17,782 MUs and Unit II at 4,645 MUs.

The nuclear power plant is located in Tirunelveli district about 650 kms from here.
